About this piece
My mixed media painting explores the societal stereotypes and gender roles: The limits of exploring dress and apparel as a man. Personally I’ve often been questioned about my sexuality and masculinity because of the clothing that I enjoy to wear. The two stars resemble the polarization of men and women through societal norms. The figure represents the beauty of the ideal world that mends the separation between the masculine and feminine stereotypes that have dominated our society for generations and suppressed individual exploration. The red and green palette relates to the contrasting motif of prejudice. The gold embellishments of the mulberry paper show visual hierarchy and status through the ideograph of individuality. The position and gaze of the figure depicts the yearning of individual expression.
